Apparently, Xiaomi Mi 9 was to make its global debut at Mobile World Congress, but three days prior, the device was officially launched in China. Not surprisingly, the new handset is outfitted with this year’s go-to-SoC for flagship devices, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Pardon me for my ignorance. I am not seeing mention of 5G capability anywhere and so, I am going to assume 5G isn’t part of the package? There are a lot to digest here and so lets not get too detailed.
First highlight is its triple-camera setup which is made up of a 48 MP sensor, a 16 MP sensor with ultra-wide lens, and a 12 MP sensor with telephoto lens. Xiaomi said that its Sony 48 MP sensor sits on the top three in the DxOMark Mobile with a score of 107, but last checked, it has since been superseded by Samsung Galaxy S10+, but it is still ahead of Apple iPhone XS Max. Around the front, gets a 20 MP beauty selfie camera embedded in a tear-drop notch.
The 855 is backed by a choice of 6, 8, or 12 GB LPDDR4X RAM and either 128 or 256 GB UFS 2.1 storage. Other highlights include the “world’s first” 20W wireless charging, 27W quick charging that gets it to full charge in an hour, Samsung 6.39-inch AMOLED FHD+ (2,340 x 1,080) display with a screen-to-body ratio of 90.7 percent, under display fingerprint sensor, and a sapphire glass. Speaking of display, it boasts a “256-step eye protection mode” that is has German Institute of Electrical Engineers’ VDE low blue light eye care certification.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Smartphone comes in three colors: deep space gray, and two choices of “holographic illusion” colors: blue and purple. There is also a special transparent back edition too. The Xiaomi Mi 9 Smartphone will go on sale in China starting February 26, 2019, but already, consumers in China is able to pre-order the device.
Prices start at 2,999 yuan which is equivalent to 447 American dollars. That’s for the China market. Xiaomi is at MWC where it is expected to offer more details of the global version of the Mi 9. I don’t what else is there to know. It’s not that we have not seen it all, but there’s a possibility that the availability and pricing for North America and Europe markets will be make known.
