Xiaomi has never been known as the leader in innovations, but it changes (kind of) on December 06, 2018 when it took to the China Mobile Global Partner Conference to reveal a 5G version of its latest flagship device, the Mi Mix 3. Not only the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G enables higher speed Internet access and live video streaming by the virtue of 5G network, it is also the first device to come outfitted with newest Snapdragon 855 SoC, announced by Qualcomm just a day earlier.
Well, that was quick. While we knew Xiaomi is already dabbling in 5G network, designing phones to work with this new high-speed mobile network, we never thought it’d bring along a device with the new SoC to the conference. Then again, it had to because, the 855 is the mobile platform that has the support for speedy 5G radio with its Snapdragon X50 5G modem which is necessary for the demonstration at the conference. The 5G capability, together with Xiaomi’s smart antenna switching technology enables a download speed of up to 2 Gbps.
Xiaomi has been exploring 5G technology as far back as 2016 and it has partnered with China Mobile, as well as other parties, to explore new applications to make full use of 5G technology. Xiaomi said it will participate in the first wave of 5G pre-commercial field test conducted by China Mobile in Q1 2019, and it will also launch the 5G version Mi Mix 3 in Europe, as well as rolling out smartphones that support China Mobile’s 5G network sometime in Q3 2019.
