Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 Folding Smartphone

The next-gen folding phone, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, has been revealed with a significantly thinner profile and lighter weight (262g). Folded thickness, not including the quite significant camera bump, is 11.2 mm and when open up, it is just 5.4 mm thin.

The new Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 features a bunch of improvements including a redesigned hinge dubbed “micro teardrop hinge” that Xiaomi claimed as the most advanced hinged in folding phones, a redesigned screen featuring Eco OLED super thin flexible display, and UTG glass, which is the same material used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold devices – and generous use of carbon fiber material.

The secondary display is a 120 Hz 6.56-inch FHD+ 21:9 aspect ratio item with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It has 1,000 nit brightness. A note about the secondary display. It is a flexible display with one-sided curved which is a very odd design choice. I mean it bumps the cost up just for, well, a curve on one side? That is kind of unnecessary, IMHO.

Meanwhile, the main display is an 8.02-inch 2K+ LTPO 2.0 display, featuring the aforementioned UTG glass, as well as Dolby Vision. The main display also touts a 120 Hz refresh rate and 1000 nit brightness. The new MIX Fold 2 has a “360” light sensor that ensures a consistent brightness between the two displays.

Another highlight is the sound which boasts a dual speaker setup and is tuned by Harman/Kardon. It is also Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certified.

Under the hood, there is the 4 nm process Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip with a 2,520 mm2 vapor chamber and a new generation 3,715 mm2 super big “boron nitride white graphene” dual cooling system.

The MIX Fold 2 is outfitted with a 4,500 mAh 67 W fast charging. In the imaging department, it has a 50 MP Sony IMX766 1/1.56” sensor for the main camera, a 13 MP super-wide-angle, and a 2X telephoto camera featuring Dual PD focus. The main camera is, of course, developed in collaboration with Leica. Around the front, it has a second-generation 20 MP under-display camera.

Rounding up the package is the MIUI Fold 13 UI that, instead of just expanding what a single page UI is, splits the screen into two pages with more at-a-glance information. In case anyone’s wondering, IR comes as a standard.

The new Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is offered with 12 GB LPDDR5 memory and a choice of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB UFS 3.1 storage, with a pre-order starting price of 8,999 RMB which works out to be around US$1,335 based on the today’s going rate.
