Xiaomi used to be known as a blatant copycat in both design and marketing, but with the introduction of Xiaomi Play, I finally see that the newly listed company has moved on with its own set of vision. Xiaomi Play is not just another Android phone. It isn’t just another budget device. It has a brilliantly positioned device with its sight set on the young and trendy. How I know? Just take a look at Xiaomi Play’s product page. Color and youthful vibrancy are high on this one.
Plus, out-of-the-box, China consumers will get 10 GB data for free for the 1st year. Just exactly what a money-starved youth needs. Aesthetically, it is colorful, offering three gradient colorways (Dream Blue, Twilight Gold and Black) designed to catch the eyes of the tender minds. Fronting the device is a narrow bezel design (though hardly bezel-less) with a water drop display, coming in at 5.84-inch FHD+ (1,080 x 2,280 pixels) display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, packing in at an impressive 432 ppi.
Under the hood, it gets a MediaTek Helio P35 chip that features an octacore 12 nm ARM Cortex-A53 processor with up to 2.3 GHz clock speed and an IMG PowerVR GE8320 680 MHz GPU. With this MediaTek Helio P35 mid-range System-on-Chip, it also boasts AI enhancements in the imaging department and “rich connectivity,” which will get to in a bit. The SoC is backed by 4 GB LPDDR4x dual-channel RAM and 64 GB onboard storage. Imaging department is helped by a dual 12 MP AI camera, while the front gets a 8 MP beauty selfie camera.
Beyond those, the rest of the device specifications are really quite rudimentary (read: entry level), but hey, you really can’t expect a lot from a device that starts at 1,099 yuan (about US$160), can you? And may I remind you that sticker comes with free 10 GB of data for 12 months, and that is quite some deal there. Keep going to find a summary of the specifications.
