Zutomayo x Orion Boombox SCR-B9(Z)

Japan is a technologically advanced country, and yet the old-school CD/cassette boombox is still a thing. Granted, lifestyle brand Doshisha’s Orion Audio gear isn’t as mainstream as smartphones or Bluetooth speakers, but they’re still selling and dropping new models. The SCR-B9(Z) is one of them.

Well, not “new-new.” It’s a collaboration with Japan’s mysterious rock band Zutto Mayonaka de ii Noni., better known as Zutomayo. The Boombox SCR-B9(Z) [JP] is based on Orion’s flagship CD/cassette/Bluetooth stereo, reworked with ZUTOMAYO styling. But of course.

And yes, it is indeed a proper portable audio system with old-school media players but with modern tech in the mix. This thing takes you straight back to the pre-MP3 days with 20 W (10+10) digital amps, 2-way stereo speakers (13.5 cm + 3 cm cone tweeter) with bass boost, vertical CD player, cassette recording/playback, FM/AM tuner, aux-in, mic-in, and even VU meters for that pro-audio vibe.

Old-school is only part of it. The SCR-B9 also packs a built-in mic, Bluetooth 5.3, and USB/microSD playback. Done listening to others? Fire up the karaoke and croon away (mic not included). It also runs on eight D-cells—huge, yes, and not exactly eco-friendly—but in a blackout, you’ll be glad it does.

Oh, and did I mention it records? You can rip to cassette tapes from CD, radio, Bluetooth, USB, microSD, or mic-in. Or if you prefer digital, you may rip MP3s straight onto a USB drive or microSD from CD, cassette, radio, Bluetooth, aux, or mic.

And it doesn’t stop there. Hook it up to a TV for audio, plug in a turntable with a built-in phono stage, or enjoy wired headphones for private listening.

As for Zutomayo’s marks, the collab edition comes in off-white with ice-blue buttons, sliders, and knobs, plus blue-tinted covers. It features line-art of the band on the cassette deck, a Zutomayo inscription on the vertical CD player, dual branding with Orion, and ZTSOUNDS logos across the body.

The unit goes up first as a limited pre-order (Sep 9–15, 2025) for ZUTOMAYO PREMIUM members, with general sales scheduled for March 2026 via ZUTOMAYO MART in limited quantities. Pretty sure this is Japan-only, where fans can grab it for 46,200 yen [JP] (about 313 USD).
