The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is ready to hit the road (and maybe even a few laps) with more power, sharper design, and that unmistakable R-style attitude.
Packing a fierce 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivering 333 PS (245 kW) through a 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, this Golf R takes the crown as VW’s most powerful production Golf to date. And for those keeping scores, yes, it puts its cousin, the 2025 Golf GTI, to polite shame with an extra dose of horsepower and attitude.
The Golf R doesn’t just talk the talk; it comes with VW’s R-Performance package. This includes a speed boost that kicks the top speed up to 270 km/h (168 mph), a couple of special driving modes—Drift and Nürburgring-tuned Special—and even a G-meter for those who want to clock their cornering bravado. The vehicle’s DCC adaptive chassis control system and R-Performance Torque Vectoring also ensure every turn feels like a personal best.
Meanwhile, over in Europe, the Golf R Variant offers all that power and more room to boot. It’s basically the Golf R’s cool, spacious sibling with a luggage compartment that can expand to a whopping 1,642 liters. With the same 333 PS engine and standard DCC adaptive chassis control, it’s ready for both grocery runs and, you know, high-speed jaunts.
Inside, the Golf R sports a new freestanding 12.9-inch touchscreen with a retooled menu layout, alongside exclusive sports seats and carbon-look options. The all-black Golf R Black Edition dials up the cool factor with blacked-out accents, dark VW badges, and Estoril wheels to keep the stealth look complete.
No word on exact prices or when the Golf R will hit U.S. showrooms but it shouldn’t be long since the Golf R and Golf GTI has just been officially announced for the US market.
