Along with the rebooted 5310, HMD Global has, in lieu of the cancelled MWC 2020, revealed three new smartphones. Leading the trio is the brand’s first global 5G smartphone, Nokia 8.3 5G, the Nokia 5.3 and budget Nokia 1.3.
Nokia 8.3 5G
First, the Nokia 8.3 5G. It is the phone that will make an appearance in the 25th James Bond movie, No Time to Die, which will hitting the theaters in November. The Nokia 8.3 5G is a truly global 5G phone in that it supports bands in every country. But it is far from being a flagship device.
Powering it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Modular Platform, backed by 6 or 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM and a choice of 64 or 128 GB storage that is further expandable with the use of microSD card (not supplied).
Main imaging is a PureView quad camera imaging system with Zeiss optics on a circular bump, featuring a 64 MP sensor, 12 MP sensor paired to an ultra-wide lens, a 2 MP depth sensor and a 2 MP sensor with macro lens.
The main camera system is complete by a dual high CRI rear flash. Meanwhile, over at the front, it has a 24 MP “hole punch” selfie camera.
Other spec-sheet details include a 6.81-inch FHD+ PureDisplay with 20:9 aspect ratio, a dedicated Google Assistant button, power button with integrated fingerprint sensor, USB-C port, 3.5 mm headphone hack, FM radio, OZO audio, wireless 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS and Beidou), and the usual suspect of sensors.
Nokia 5.3
The Nokia 5.3, on the other hand, is a mid-ranger with Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip, 3/4/6 GB RAM and 64 GB – expandable up to 512 GB via microSD card slot.
It has a 6.55-inch HD+ screen, also in 20:9 aspect ratio, an AI-powered quad-camera (13 MP f1.8 + 2 MP depth sensor + 5 MP ultra-wide + 2 MP macro) with LED flash, and a 8 MP f2.0 front-facing snapper.
Other spec sheet details include USB-C port, dedicated Google Assistant button, 3.5 mm headphone jack, FM radio, dual-mic setup, wireless 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS (A-GPS), 4G LTE radios, and a 4,000 mAh battery.
Nokia 1.3
Finally, the Nokia 1.3 is the entry level smartphone imbued with Android 10 (Go edition). It is the first smartphones to be launched with Camera Go, as well as low-light AI image fusion technology, Gallery Go and a bright 5.71-inch HD+ edge-to-edge screen.
It is powered by Qualcomm QM215 chip with a Gigabyte of RAM and a modest 16 GB storage which, fortunately, is expandable up to 400 GB via microSD card slot.
Other details include an 8 MP main camera with LED flash, a 5 MP front-facing camera, micro USB (USB 2.0), bare minimum number of sensors, dedicated Google Assistant button, 3.5 mm headphone jack, FM radio receiver, 4G LTE radio, wireless 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou), and a removable 3,000 mAh battery.
Pricing and Availability
The Nokia 8.3 5G will be available worldwide starting this Summer and will sell for 599 euros (roughly US$644) for the 6 GB/ 64 GB model and 649 euros (or about US$698) for the 8 GB/ 128 GB configuration. The Nokia 5.3 and Nokia 1.3 will be out in April and are expected to retail for 189 euros (around US$203) and 95 euros (approximately US$102), respectively.
In a somewhat related news… HMD Global also announced a 007-branded special edition Kevlar Case for use with Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 smartphones. The case will be available end of March, priced at 19.99 euros (about US$21.50) a pop.
