Some people are skeptical about electric cars because of battery because, when it conks out, it, well, conks out*. On land, it is perfectly fine, but in the air? That could be a life and death situation. However, if you are unfazed by this obvious fact and has shit load of money, then look forward to Eviation Alice Electric Commuter Aircraft.
This so-called “Tesla of aircraft” has recently revealed a production version, signifying a step closer to reality of electric flight. Eviation Alice Electric Commuter Aircraft is a small aircraft measuring just 56 feet (17 meters) and has a wingspan of 59 feet (18 meters).
While small, Eviation is private jet is said to accommodate up to 9 passengers with a maximum payload of 2,500 lbs (1,134 kg) as a freighter or 2,400 lbs (1,089 kg) as a commuter aircraft. So, yes, it can be configured to transport cargo too.
Two magniX 650 electric motors, each rated at 650 kW, drive a rotor. On the latest spec-sheet, Eviation Alice has a range of 440 nautical miles (815 km or 506 miles), a max cruise speed of 220 knots (253 mph/407 km/h), has a maximum ceiling of 32,000 feet and a take-off distance of 2,600 feet (792 meters).
To put things into perspective, a Embraer Phenom 300E has a take-off distance of 3,200 feet (975 meters). Granted the latter is a jet engine aircraft and carries up to 11 person.
Eviation Alice Electric Commuter Aircraft is expected to go into service in 2024. Prior to that, the aerospace company has planned to hold an inaugural flight later this year (2021).
*I know what you are thinking. It is no different than traditional fuel. Well, the thing is, electrical system is subjected to many factors. What if there’s a leakage of electricity that results in the battery losing charge at a rapid rate. Or perhaps some rodent chewed of the wires mid-flight? Pardon me for my irrational fear, but it is not entirely impossible.
