Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch

I am not surprised if you have not heard of the Virtual Boy by Nintendo because it was, after all, one of gaming’s most infamous flops that was pulled before most people even knew it existed. Notwithstanding this ‘sort-of’ VR headset’s failure, Nintendo, for some reason, decided that it should bring it back.

Folks, meet the Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. It is a modern-day re-creation of the bold, future-forward stereoscopic 3D display that lets you experience the flopped tech today. Didn’t I say it is a strange marketing decision?

Nintendo said it “is a replica of the original hardware,” but in reality, it differs slightly. To experience Virtual Boy, you will need to own a Nintendo Switch 2 or the Nintendo Switch. So, no, this modern-day, 2020s incarnation of this iconic gaming hardware is not standalone like its forebear; it serves as an accessory. Flip up the top, and you will find a receptacle for your beloved Switch 2 or Switch. Unfortunately, though, Switch Lite is not supported.

Once docked, you will be able to relive classic Virtual Boy titles like Mario’s Tennis, Teleroboxer, Galactic Pinball, and more, in all their red-and-black stereoscopic 3D glory. You will not be left hanging with just those games; more titles will be added in the future. There’s a catch here, though: this product can only be purchased by those who have a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. To play games in the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, you will need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

Like the OG, this gaming hardware that looks straight out of sci-fi flicks like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is not wearable. Like the 90s hardware, it has a stand, eye shade, and lens cover, but instead of the classic Nintendo controller, you will be using Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2.

The Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch is set to release on February 17, 2026, for US$99.99. If your wallet is feeling the pinch, you’d be glad to know there is a more affordable Cardboard Model, going for US$24.99. Wait a minute… the Cardboard Model looks awfully familiar. Now, where have we seen this before? Hmmm
