Apple Watch Series 6 Smartwatch

With a new style of commercial that proudly proclaims “It Already Does That”, you sort of know that isn’t much new features going on with the newly revealed Apple Watch Series 6 smartwatch.

Apple Watch Series 6 is the smartwatch to get if 1) you haven’t already upgraded your Apple Watch for the longest time and 2) you really need the blood-oxygen (SpO2) reading anytime, anywhere.

Of course, perhaps vanity will prompt you to get the new Apple Watch that offers new finishes and maybe the spanking new watchOS 7, but you will get the latter on your old, supported Watch soon too.

To be fair, it has other new stuff like a faster S6 System in Package (SiP, or Apple speaks for System on Chip, or SoC), the next-generation always-on altimeter, and… I think those are really it for what’s new.

The real power comes in watchOS7 which brings to the tablet Family Setup, sleep tracking, automatic hand washing detection, new workout types, and for the style-conscious, watch face connoisseurs, you will be glad that there is the ability to curate and share watch faces.

Aesthetically, saved from the new finishes, Apple Watch largely retains the tried and tested design that has been copied by others the world over. There is really nothing wrong with it, but I just wish for a round watch and maybe even a rugged version. But that’s just me and my wishful thinking.

As usual, it is not cheap. But that does not mean you can’t own one because, now there’s the Apple Watch SE aka the (if ever so slightly) affordable Apple Watch. Yes, there is a new affordable Apple Watch too.

Key notables include the largest Apple Watch display, fall detection, advanced fitness features, and the goodness of watchOS 7. It also gets always-on altimeter found on the Series 6, latest motion sensors, a lesser chip by the way of S5 SiP and dual-core processor and the usual like Digital Crown, built-in speaker and microphone, Siri support, Walkie-Talkie feature and Bluetooth 5.0.

Apple Watch SE is offered in GPS and GPS + Cellular variety with a starting price of US$279 and US$329, respectively. It is available to order today with availability beginning on September 18.
