Using a computer feels effortless until using your hands is difficult or impossible. Suddenly, the humble mouse and keyboard become two rather stubborn barriers. Augmental’s answer is the MouthPad, a custom-fitted Bluetooth controller operated with the tongue, head movements, and sip gestures. It is the kind of invention Paul Alexander, better known as “the Man in the Iron Lung,” could have benefited from.
The MouthPad fits over the upper teeth like a slim retainer. A pressure-sensitive trackpad against the palate lets the tongue move the cursor, click, swipe, and perform other customizable gestures. The latest version can also trigger keyboard shortcuts, switch between several devices, and map controls to WASD for gaming and 3D modeling. Battery life exceeds seven hours.
This really is an awesome invention that many people with disabilities could benefit from. More than 100 people with mobility challenges already use it for studying, working, creating art, and gaming—some for as long as 16 hours a day. One user even matched the cursor-control performance of advanced implanted brain-computer interfaces. No brain surgery required, which is a fairly compelling advantage.
Augmental has also introduced VOX, a skin-worn microphone pendant described as an “invisible keyboard.” It picks up sound through both the air and the body, allowing users to dictate quietly while rejecting much of the surrounding noise and nearby chatter. It activates only with a button press or a MouthPad tongue gesture, so it is not listening in the background.
Pairing VOX with the MouthPad could eventually lead to fully silent speech input. The system would learn to match tongue movements with speech patterns, allowing users to communicate with computers without making a sound.
The MouthPad is now publicly available in the U.S. for US$1,400, excluding a required dental scan costing around US$100. VOX is available in beta for US$200, with shipping expected in late 2026. Proceeds from the first batch will fund MouthPads for people who need them.
