Barbie 2026 Lunar New Year Doll wearing red gown with gold peony design

Another year, and another Barbie dressed up for the occasion of Spring Festival, a.k.a. Chinese New Year, or for inclusivity’s sake, the Lunar New Year—since the celebration stretches well beyond just one culture. Also, do not ask why last year’s edition did not make an appearance here. I must have been on a time machine and skipped December 2023. Anyhoo, designer Joyce Chen took over the baton from Guo Pei for last year’s Lunar New Year Barbie and continues her stint this year with the Barbie 2026 Lunar New Year Doll.

Dressed in a bright red gown, this Barbie comes prepared for the occasion with zero subtlety. Red dominates the look to symbolize good fortune, while a gold peony print adds references to prosperity and honor. The bodice features a fan-inspired design, a stylized nod to the fans commonly used in traditional dances and exchanged during Lunar New Year celebrations. It is decorative without being busy, which is harder to pull off than it looks.

The outfit is completed with a sheer golden shawl, bold earrings featuring traditional Chinese symbolism, and a long, sleek hairstyle that keeps things polished rather than playful. This release carries the Black Label designation and uses the Mackie face sculpt paired with the Model Muse body type. Packaging is designed by Laydiana Chiv, and a Certificate of Authenticity is included for collectors who appreciate official paperwork.

As with previous Lunar New Year editions, this doll is clearly aimed at display rather than play (but really, no one is stopping you from doing so). Like all Barbie dolls, she does not stand on her own. There’s a stand included, though, which is just as well given the amount of fabric involved. Colors and decorations may vary, but the intent is unmistakable.

Joyce Chen continues to show a steady hand with this annual assignment, balancing cultural references with collector-friendly presentation. It is a stark difference from last year’s Peking Opera outfit.

The Barbie 2026 Lunar New Year Doll is priced at US$55.
