The BMW R20 Concept is not the only cool Beemer to be revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Unveiled alongside the sleek, retro-modern two-wheeler is this: BMW Concept Skytop. The Skytop is a design study. It is an elegant, unique open two-seater design rocking flowing, sporty lines with warm monochromatic colors.
The car references the legendary BMW Z8 roadster and the BMW 503. Key design features include an illuminated kidney grille, winglets replacing door handles, light-alloy wheels with precise lamellas, and the iconic BMW shark-nose design that leads to a prominent sweeping hood.
It further boosts a retracted rear section, pronounced spline from hood to tailgate, custom-developed LED headlights on milled aluminum carriers, and flat rear lights. The exact motor that powers it is not known. BMW said “The BMW Concept Skytop also comes with the most powerful V8 engine in the BMW drive train portfolio”—similar to the BMW Z8. I am no guru of BMW, so I wouldn’t know which V8 BMW is talking about.
On the inside, the BMW Concept Skytop features Brogue-style leather surfaces, reddish-brown leather seats, crystal applications in the cockpit, a leather-finished roll-over bar, a fully retractable rear window, and removable leather roof parts stored in luggage space.
The color scheme is also one of the highlights of this design study. It features a muted silver with chrome shadow effect exterior, a smooth transition from interior to exterior, crafted by BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.
