There have been so many cases of school shootings that it warrants the need for bulletproof backpacks. And yes, it is a thing—and sadly, has been for several years now. You probably want your kids to carry one when going to school in the U.S. While the Ballisticpac Backpack Body Armor from non-lethal self-defense weapon maker Byrna is not for kids, it was born out of the same threat.

Designed for office workers, teachers, and security personnel, the Ballisticpac features body armor concealed within a backpack, ready for quick deployment when needed. It utilizes a patented Quickdraw ballistic body armor system tucked away in a rugged and comfy backpack, which can be deployed in seconds using just one hand. The system protects the wearer’s front and back.
There are several variations. It is available as a backpack-only option without the armor plate and front MOLLE (US$339.99, in green or black), and as a package with a handgun-rated (US$499.99) or a rifle-rated armor plate (US$899.99). The latter is available with front MOLLE for the same price.
The armor plates come in several grades as well. There is the regular Byrna Shield Bullet Resistant Backpack Body Armor (US$99.99–US$129.99) that stops up to a .44 Magnum round, the Byrna Level IIIA armor plate (US$159.99) that protects from pistol threats up to .44 Magnum @ 1,474 ft/s @ 17.3 ft, and the Byrna Level III+ armor plate (US$279.99) for protection against firearm threats up to 7.62 × 51/.308 at 2,780 ft/s at 15 meters. The rated plates have been tested and comply with Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06.
