If there is only one collection for any G-Shock fans to acquire, then it would be the new Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary Remaster Black. It is a three-piece collection that celebrates the history and evolution of the G-Shock brand since its founding.
The Casio G-Shock 40th Anniversary Remaster Black features three iconic timepieces, namely, DWE5657RE-1, DW6640RE-1, and GA2140RE-1A, each of which represents a new evolution in function, material, or both, for the beloved G-Shock silhouettes.
G-Shock DWE5657RE-1
The DWE5657RE-1, is in my humble opinion, the most unique of the trio. It pays homage to the DW5600C and DW5700C by combining the two iconic watches that were first introduced in 1987. This commemorative timepiece is faithful to the original models while offering an upgrade to the watch’s design features.
Now, you may be wondering how the heck a watch pays homage to both a square and round design at the same time. Well, it has an interchangeable bezel. A unique core guard structure allows for the interchanging of the bezel for the two different looks to be enjoyed, reminiscent of the DW-5600 or DW-5700. It’s like getting two wristwatches for the price of one, except that you can only have one look at any given time.
G-Shock DW6640RE-1
The DW6640RE-1 is a tribute to the DW-660 introduced in 1994. It was the first G-Shock to feature the electroluminescent (EL) backlight which later evolved to become the Super Illuminator which this commemorative model is outfitted with. When activated, the Super Illuminator on the DW6640RE-1 showcases the 40th-anniversary logo.
G-Shock GA2140RE-1A
Finally, the GA2140RE-1A is a nod to the model that heralded the new era of G-Shock, the GA2100. It shares the same streamlined, minimalist octagonal form, but incorporates special anniversary design features, which include the iconic number numbers imprinted into the bands using a hot-stamping process that result in a textural, indented effect that is both subtle and impactful.
Common Features
The same treatment can also be found in the other two models too. In addition, the watches also feature a metal band loop with gold colored IP with the words “Since 1983” and four stars engraved on the metal, plus a star on the mode button and a commemorative 40th-anniversary logo engraved on the case back.
As expected the trio also features G-Shock technology that includes shock resistance, 200M water resistance, 1/100s stopwatch (24 hr), 1s, 24h Timer (24 hr), multi-function alarm (DWE5657RE-1 and DW6640RE-1), 5 daily alarms (GA2140RE-1A), LED backlight (Super Illuminator) (DWE5657RE-1 and DW6640RE-1), double LED light (Super Illuminator) (GA2140RE-1A), full auto calendar, flash alert (DWE5657RE-1 and DW6640RE-1), world time featuring 31 time zones, 48 cities + UTC (GA2140RE-1A).
