Don’t ask me why is this coming out of China instead of Japan where both CASIO G-Shock and cult mecha anime Gundam, the granddaddy of Japanese mecha, originated. Anyways, here it is, a collection of Gundam-themed G-Shock timepieces dished out by CASIO to celebrate Gundam’s 40th anniversary this year. The collection consists of four G-Shock wrist watches, each with color(s) and designs inspired by highly recognizable mecha/mecha guises, including RX-78-2 Gundam, MS-06S Char’s Zaku II, RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, and RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee.
In addition to the cosmetic treatment, each watch will come with a “Haro” storage container with the RX-78-2 Gundam, RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, and RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee in Green Haro while Char’s Zaku in Zaku Red Haro storage. For those who aren’t aware, “Haro” is the ball-like robot that can transition from ball form to robot form. Sadly, though, none of the watches will come with an action figure like the G-Shock x Transformers we saw last November.
Casio G-Shock x Gundam Collection will be available from CASIO’s China ecommerce store on Taobao starting mid-2019.
The following is a quick rundown of the pricing of the individual pieces:
CASIO G-Shock GA-110TR-7APRGD RX-78-2 Gundam – 1,390 yuan (approx. US$207)
CASIO G-Shock GA-700-4APRGD MS-06S Char’s Zaku II – 1,090 yuan (approx. US$163)
CASIO G-Shock GA-110MW-7APRGD RX-0 Unicorn Gundam – 1,090 yuan (approx. US$163)
CASIO G-Shock GAW-100G-1APRGD RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee – 1,690 yuan (approx. US$252)
As their respective model code indicates, the RX-78-2 Gundam and RX-0 Unicorn Gundam are based off the GA-110, the MS-06S Char’s Zaku II is based on the GA-700, and the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee is based on the GAW-100 G-Shock watches. Beyond the aesthetic change, these watches are pretty much the G-Shock you have come to know. Meaning, they bears all the features and functionality of the respective models.
Notwithstanding the lack of more compelling features, namely, action figures or maybe even card collection, the Casio G-Shock x Gundam Collection is a must-have for any true-blue Gundam fanatics – that’s if you have a way of getting it from China’s Taobao website.
