Dell Concept Luna Repairable Laptop Update

Sustainability and businesses rarely go hand-in-hand. Take for example, if you make laptops, wouldn’t you want consumers to upgrade often so you can sell more? Makes little sense to help them last longer, i.e. be sustainable, doesn’t it? But not with Dell. Last year, the computer maker introduced a concept laptop with repairability and ease of upgrading in mind.

Dell proposed sustainable laptop is called Concept Luna. Not only did Dell propose modularity for repairability and ease of upgrade – which is not new, btw, but it also has a bold plan for a future where nothing goes to waste. In this plan, not only is technology dematerialized but also the materials used by Dell will fuel a robust circular economy. This will ultimately lead to a reduced need for new raw materials.

Fast forward to December 2022, the company offers an update to this sustainable concept, termed Concept Luna’s Evolution. The updated Concept Luna uses no adhesives and cables and also reduces the number screws used. What this means is that repairing and dismantling the system will be much easier.

If the video is an accurate representation of the updated Concept Luna, then it would just take a tool to pop open the entire machine to repair, replace or upgrade any components – from the screen to the keyboard to the mainboard.

Dell said with the evolved Concept Luna design, it will take mere minutes to disassemble a device by the recyclers. Moreover, the design also makes it easy to be taken apart by robots too.

It is indeed an exciting development but how soon it will materialize or if it will ever materialize is unclear. In the meantime, you may learn more in an article by the CTO of Dell’s Client Solutions Group, Glen Robson.
