Well, it looks like the granddaddy of mecha, Gundam, is set to dazzle fans with some bling. Marking the 1st anniversary of the Gundam Base Tokyo opening, Bandai will be offering a RG 1/144 Unicorn Gundam in gold coating. Now, don’t get too excited over the gold coating cos’ it is just gold coating (basically, it spells fingerprint magnet) and not real gold plated. I mean, seriously, you don’t expect a 8,640 yen (around US$77) kit to actually sport real gold, right?
But that is not to say this is a cheap coating. Bandai said that the gold on this Real Grade (RG) kit is applied using a special plating process and features pearl molding colors. Beyond that, it is the Real Grade Mobile Suit Gundam UC (Unicorn) you have come to adore. In case you need a quick education on what a Real Grade or RG is, here’s the gist:
“Real Grade (RG) (リアルグレード Riarugurēdo) is a line of Gunpla kits by Bandai that was introduced in 2010 as part of the Gundam 30th Anniversary commemoration project. These consist of Mobile Suits from both the Universal Century and the Alternate Centuries. The RG line combines the best aspects of the other three Gunpla lines: The small size and affordable prices of the High Grade, the advanced inner frame technology of the Master Grade and the massive parts count of the Perfect Grade.”
The Gold-coated Gundam Based Limited Unicorn Gundam is expected to be released on August 10, 2018 for the aforementioned price of 8,640 yen.
