This is it. The much anticipated next-generation Google Pixel phones have been announced and they are pretty much what we have expected based on the numerous leaks and rumors. Google set out to create the second generation Pixel based on the same principle of making a smartphone simpler and smarter, and with it, you’d expect a lot software driven features like, for examples, Google Assistant right out-of-the-box, software dominant cameras, augmented reality stickers, Google Lens that searches what you see – just to pick out a few.
Then there’s the promised of all-day battery life that offers seven hours of use with just 15 minutes of charging and finally, it is some decent dust and water-resistance with an IP67 rating. Not the IP68 we would love, but way better than its predecessor at IP57. As with the original, the Pixel 2 is offered in two sizes with similar specs and features except for the obvious, the display size and resolution. There is the 5-inch Pixel 2, featuring a “crystal-clear cinematic OLED display and then there is the 6-inch Pixel 2 XL boasting pOLED 18:9 AR edge-to-edge display.
As far as colorway is concerned, the smaller of the two is available in three colors: Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue, while the larger model comes in Just Black and Black & White (my personal favorite!). Expect Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box (duh…) and with it, an always-on display that lets yo in on the notifications at a glance without turning on the device. And oh, there is also the squeeze thing on Pixel 2, exactly as it was rumored. By squeezing the device, users can launch Google Assistant to get real-time help.
Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are available for pre-order starting today in the U.S. with a starting price of $649. Both devices are also available to Australia, Canada, Germany, India and U.K. and for the first time, Pixel 2 XL will be heading to Italy, Singapore and Spain, but that will only happen later this year. Keep going for the specifications of both devices in their entirety (there’s a promo after that too).
