Not everyone is rich enough to own a true-blue aviation timepiece, much less a real fighter jet, but thanks to an industry disruptor, Helgray, you can own a beautiful, aviation-inspired timepiece without wiping out your savings. Unfortunately, though, Helgray does not make aircraft and so, this young Canadian watchmaker’s latest timepiece, Hornet, is as close as you can get to owning a F/A-18 Hornet. You won’t be able to take to the sky with this Hornet, obviously, nor will you look like dashing Tom Cruise in his 20s, but rest assure, your wrist will be happy and you will too because it looks so damn cool. We love how the red crown, which is used to adjust the inner bezel for the second time zone, makes the whole watch pops.
And it is pretty sizeable too, sporting a 42mm case diameter (47mm lug-to-lug) and like Helgray’s previous pieces, the features are right up there at the top with timepieces costing twice as much. Features you can expect include 316L stainless steel case, double-domed sapphire crystal, bi-directional rotating bezel, superluminova coated hands and graduations, Japanese Miyota 1L45 quartz movement, 22mm bucket and strap, and finally, 10ATM water resistance.
The watch face deserve some special mentions here. In addition to the luminescent coating, it is designed to promote at-a-glance legibility with large applied stick markers and a pair of unique hands; large arrow for hour and straight hand for minute, that provides at-a-glance time-telling without any chance of mix up, which can be a disastrous thing when you are flying or scheduled to meet your boss or girlfriend (we would think the latter would be more dire).
Once again, Helgray has taken its latest endeavor to Kickstarter where you can pre-order this handsome timepiece for a reasonable $229-$249, depending on when you back the campaign. Continue reading to catch a few more look of the Hornet.
