Modern Nativity calls it the Hipster Nativity Set, but to me, it is a fun parody of the classic nativity scene that oddly, puts a smile on our faces> The best part is, no religion is being poked fun at; it is just the classic, updated to today’s – specifically 2016 – context. So what do 2016’s context has? Well, according to Modern Nativity, everyone’s in their proudest, modern getups with Joseph sporting a man bun, dressed in a denim shirt, taking a wefie with baby Jesus and Mary, who happens to be holding a to-go coffee. And then there’s of course, the three wise men, who probably used Google Maps to find their way to the new born, but instead of walking, they have arrived in their Segways, each armed with a gift for the baby brought from Amazon.
It is also worthy to mention that the stable Joseph and the gang were in is just like the original, but now has a solar-equipped roof to, you know, help to ease the burden on the environment a little. Though it is not clear what is the electricity generated used for. Perhaps, an wall outlet or two? Or the Christmas tree’s lighting? The nativity scene wouldn’t be complete without the shepherd and animals, and in this case, a teenager, who appears to be watching a video, takes the place alongside a dressed up lamb and a “100% ORGANIC” cow savoring on a gluten-free diet.
All told, the Hipster Nativity Set is indeed very 2016 which should inject some much need fun amidst the current less-than-favorable economic, social and political situation. However, before you can smile at it all day long, you will have to suffer economically first, as this Hipster Nativity Set will run you back at a healthy $129.99.
