Huawei P30 and P30 Pro Smartphones

So, this is it. The new, much anticipated and much leaked Huawei’s successor to the lauded P20, the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro, are official. As per the leaks, both models gets in bump is the imaging department where the P30’s main shooter has been upgraded to a triple camera setup and the P30 Pro, a quad-camera setup. Sad to say, though, on both devices, the annoying camera bump and notch, albeit a very tiny one (called Dewdrop display), are still present.

Huawei P30 and P30 Pro Smartphones

As with the outgoing flagship, the two models differ in just a few areas, namely, screen size, storage, battery and of course, the cameras. The cameras on Huawei P30 Pro claims a DxOMark Mobile score of 112. Beyond that, they are pretty much identical. Powering either device is Huawei-owned HiSilicon’s latest flagship System-on-Chip, the Kirin 980 SoC – the world’s first 7 nm process chipset – featuring Dual Neural-network Processing Unit, and an octacore processor made up of 2 Cortex-A76-based 2.6 GHz, 2 Cortex-A76-based 1.92 GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 1.88 GHz chips.

Huawei P30 Pro Smartphone

With the less obtrusive notch and the lack of physical home button, and the curved edge display, the P30 is nearing a true edge-to-edge device. Like the Mate 20, it now uses in-display fingerprint scanner – a technology that we totally dig and thought it should be a standard befitting the world’s technological advancement. Before we get on to the rundown of the specifications, there is something interesting going on in the imaging aspect of the Pro model.

In addition to a 40 MP Super Sensing Camera and a 20 MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens, it also gets a third camera that does incredible optical zoom and a Time of Flight camera. To achieve what Huawei dubbed as SuperZoom, it uses a new periscope telephoto lens like Oppo’s upcoming Reno phone. Working in sync with the 40 MP main shooter and in-built optical image stabilization, the so-called SuperZoom lens affords up to 10x hybrid zoom and Huawei go as far as to claim it can capture the Moon with up to 50x zoom.

Huawei P30 Smartphone

Why do we have a feeling that capturing the Moon will be a benchmark of mobile cameras moving forward? Xiaomi also made the claim to capture the Moon as-is, though not so much by zoom. Anyways, low light imaging prowess is also a huge thing on the Pro model with the device capable of insane ISO 409,600. And then there are Super Macro (as close as 2.5 cm), long exposure and more, and of course, AI-powered photography, including AI HDR+.

The emphasis on photography is huge. So huge that at one point, I almost forgot that we are talking about mobile phone. Anyways.. continue reading to find a table of side-by-side specifications comparison between the two new Huawei P devices.
