These days, CES is the event of the year that can’t be ignored by any industry, including the fashion industry. That said, even Kate Spade New York is in, well, kind of. The American luxury label has just announced its new Scallop touchscreen smartwatch – the first smartwatch developed under the leadership of the brand’s new creative director, Nicola Glass – coinciding with CES 2019. The Kate Spade New York Scallop Smartwatch 2 is also on display at CES 2019 at the Google Assistant Playground located at The Central Plaza-21.
Aesthetically, the second-gen Scallop smartwatch pretty much inherited its predecessor’s design wholesale (though Glass may beg to differ). It features the signature scallop detail on the bezel, and on the back of the silicone strap and pink gold-tone bracelet. Also carried from the first Scallop is the the spade at the 12 o’clock index that serves as a heart rate touch point, enabling checking of heart rate just a finger touch away. Now, why is that important? I have no idea. Perhaps, to keep the heart in check every time you buy something really pricey from the label?
Anyways… what really matters are the features which now include heart rate tracking that works with Google Fit and other third party apps, payment technology via NFC with Google Pay, and built-in GPS so that you can leave your phone at home while you working out outside. Other features include a 1.19-inch circular touchscreen face, fitness tracking (steps, calories and all that jazz), Google Assistant support, water resistant to 3 ATM (30 meters or 100 feet), wireless charging, music control, and of course, it is powered by Google’ Wear OS.
Kate Spade NY Scallop Smartwatch 2 is part of the label’s Spring 2019 collection and it is available in time for Valentine’s Day gifting. That said, it is available online via pre-sale as we speak. Officially availability is late January 2019 at brick and mortar stores, as well as katespade.com. At the time of this writing, three models are offered: Rose Gold-tone Stainless Steel, Vachetta Leather, and Black Silicone, with prices starting at $295.
