NERV spent years preparing humanity for the arrival of the Angels. Apparently, nobody prepared us for EVA Unit-01 being turned into lunch. KFC Hong Kong has teamed up with Studio Khara’s Neon Genesis Evangelion for the Purple Power Awakens campaign.
On the menu is a purple burger inspired by Unit-01, matching purple sweet treats, collectible character cards, and some lovely merch. If you are outside Hong Kong or Macau, congratulations: you have been assigned the role of watching helplessly from Central Dogma.
Let’s start with the very thing we are here for: the burger. Inspired by EVA Unit-01’s iconic purple color, the all-new, limited-time Purple A.T. Field Spicy Chicken Burger features a crispy, mildly spicy chicken thigh paired with pickles and red onion, all served in an eye-catching purple bun.
KFC Hong Kong claims that the burger—presumably the meat—is “so crunchy, you may go berserk.” But please don’t. Seriously. Just eat it like a regular person. This is not the first time Evangelion has gotten a burger; The Sun & The Moon café—the same café that created the super-cool Godzilla-themed burger and meals—did it before.
In addition, KFC HK is bringing back two summer snacks to complete the purple fiesta: the Rich Purple Sweet Potato Egg Tart and Crispy Purple Sweet Potato Balls. The former is basically an egg tart with smooth purple sweet potato filling topped with soft, chewy marshmallows. Meanwhile, the Crispy Purple Sweet Potato Balls feature a crispy exterior with smooth purple sweet potato filling inside.
Obviously, those are things that you will forget after sending them into your gut. But for the true fan who wants something other than IG photos to remind them of the campaign, there are the limited-edition Neon Genesis Evangelion character cards.
You can summon the A1 Purple Power Awakens Feast and receive one limited-edition Neon Genesis Evangelion character card. All told, there are eight designs. The design you receive is completely random, btw.
For delivery, KFC is offering an A1 Purple Power Awakens 3-Person Feast for HK$168—effectively giving you a three-person combo at a discounted bundle rate.
Besides the collectible character cards, there is also some limited-edition merchandise [HK] featuring the EVA pilots and their EVA units, which dine-in or takeaway customers who spend HK$49 or more can purchase. The merch includes an EVA Unit-01 Multipurpose Mat (HK$99), a Shinji × EVA Unit-01 Mug (HK$89), and an EVA Character Message Stand (HK$59), available in three designs.
The three designs are Shinji × EVA Unit-01, Asuka × EVA Unit-02, and Rei × EVA Unit-00. The stand has space for attaching memo paper or writing with a water-based marker. I don’t believe you can choose the design, though.
