We knew there will be a Gundam edition Oppo smartphone, but what we did not know is that the device is the brand’s new flagship device, Oppo Reno Ace. That’s right. There is yet another Reno in the Chinese market and it is the second device that we know to sport a 90 Hz AMOLED display after OnePlus 7 Pro/OnePlus 7T.
It is a true flagship touting Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus Mobile Platform, UFS 3.0 storage, as well as a 4,000 mAh battery, supporting the handset maker’s latest 65 W SuperVOOC 4.0 charging technology that can fully charged the device in just 30 minutes.
The display is, btw, 6.5-inch, and the RAM and UFS 3.0 storage are 8/12 GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128/256 GB, respectively. Imaging is by the way of a quad camera main camera (48 MP main camera + 13 MP telephoto + 8 MP ultra-wide + 2 MP monochrome item). Not sure about the front camera, though. There’s no mention of it on the product page.
Other notables include “4D vibration” for more realistic haptic feedback during gameplay, “Dry Ice” cooling system that continuously remove heat from the device, multiple antennas strategically placed around the device and “Link Boost” in which simultaneous connection to dual WiFi/WiFi and 4G to achieve seamless connection even in more obscure environment like in an elevator or in a subway.
At the end of the day, the Oppo Reno Ace is just another flagship device. I think even Oppo thinks the same because, it does not even have a proper product page for it despite it being an obvious flagship. However, the real star here is the not Reno Ace proper; it should be the Gundam Edition that has a designed inspired by Gundam RX-78-2.
Strangely, though, it has less RAM, at 8 GB, over the standard issue. You do, however, be getting a lot more than a Reno Ace with a fancy rear cover. There is a Gundam-themed case and even the cable is of matching color too. Sweet. The Oppo Reno Ace Gundam Edition is limited to just 30,000 units. Gundam is, btw, celebrating 40 years since its creation.
Oppo Reno Ace is available to order in China with a starting price of 3,199 yuan (about US$453) while the Oppo Reno Ace Gundam Edition sells for 3,599 yuan or around U$509 based on today’s going rate.
