The recommended ages say it is for children but the price is kind for grown-ups. We are talking about the new Playmobil Star Trek Klingon Bird of Prey (71089). That’s right. It’s Commander Kruge’s Klingon Bird-of-Prey spaceship.
Like the Playmobil Star Trek USS Enterprise playset (70548), this toy features lights and original sounds based on the movie from the 1980s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (see clip below if you need a refresher).
The set includes figures of the notorious Klingons himself, Commander Kruge, as well as his crew (Maltz, Torg, Gunner), Admiral Kirk, and Mr. Spock. Also included a bunch of accessories and the planet Genesis (or part of it, really) – complete with lava and all, so you can play out the scenes from the 1984 Star Trek film.
The Planet Genesis also doubles as a bottom plate for the stand for displaying the spacecraft on the shelf or table. Speaking of displaying, also included is a hanging ornament that lets you suspend the spacecraft from the ceiling if you so desire. If I can be honest, the former is possibly the coolest of the two display options. I mean, how can it not be the coolest of the two with the lava and flame spewing from the rocky surface of Planet Genesis?
The spacecraft further features an opening cockpit to reveal a detailed interior, a replaceable cockpit screen for playing out different scenarios, adjustable wings, and the ability to shoot projectiles.
The Playmobil Star Trek Klingon Bird of Prey (71089) Playset is recommended for ages 10 and up, and will retail for a hefty US$299.99 when it becomes available in December 2022. It will be available in Europe earlier though, in October, for 299,99 €.
