Somewear Global Satellite Hotspot by Somewear Labs

You know what’s urbanites worst fear? To be disconnected and it seems like this fear has stopped many from venturing beyond the city limits. But where our cell towers can’t reach, there is always satellite communication. All hail to technology. Except there’s just one problem. Satellite phones are not cheap and then there are equally pricey subscription to bear. This is where Somewear Global Satellite Hotspot by San Francisco-based Somewear Labs aims to fill the gap.

Somewear is, as the product name implies, a device that serves as a intermediary between your disconnected device to the outside world via satellite. It is a standalone, palm-size device. It dispenses the need for a case, which means it will still continue serve you when you decide to change platform. It promised to offer 100 percent global coverage so long you have a clear view of the sky.

Through a combination of hardware and Somewear app, you get in touch with your family and friends through chat and emails, as well as letting them know where you are, access weather information and alerts, and most critically, it is able to let emergency response team know that you are in trouble. So, yes. It is also trusty SOS/emergency device too – thanks to the included 24/7 SOS monitoring offered by GEOS Worldwide. The app also allows to communicate with emergency services to help them understand your level of distress, so appropriate vehicle and team can be dispatch to help.

Somewear does all of the aforementioned even in the most remote locations in the world. Now, that really is a peace of mind. But not without its caveats. Apart from the hardware which starts at $299 on Kickstarter, you will need to hook yourself up to a plan. However, Somewear Labs promised to offer the most flexible data plans. At the time of this writing, Somewear Labs has three plans that ranges from 15 bucks to 50 bucks a month. Unfortunately, it does not seem to have subscription plans. We sure hope to see a short term plan in near future, so occasional back country adventurers can be covered as well. Hit the jump for the product pitch video to learn more.
