The Sony Xperia PRO previewed at last year’s MWC has finally arrived. Sony is branding the Sony Xperia PRO as “a new professional 5G device.” I am not sure how pro is the device, but the price tag certainly is pro-level. But more on that a bit (you have to be seated for this!).

The “communication device,” which promised to enable “content creators to work faster and smarter,” is the world’s first smartphone with dedicated HDMI connectivity and supports 5G mmWave and 5G Sub-6 for high-speed data transfer.

If that’s not enough, Sony said the device is engineered to optimize signal reception. All these work to deliver 5G solution for professional content workflow and yes, it is a smartphone. And a very expensive one, costing around US$2,499.99.

The device is available starting January 26 from select Sony authorized dealers across North America. For the princely sum, you get the aforementioned HDMI input for connecting the device to an Alpha camera or any other HDMI input equipped camera to enable a 5G data link for broadcasting video in real-time.

The HDMI input also allows the smartphone to serve as a high-quality 6.5-inch 4K OLED monitor through the preinstalled External Monitor host app. So, I guess that makes the Sony Xperia PRO 5G a very expensive accessory for professional photographers/videographers? Perhaps. As a boon, it does everything a smartphone can do, including, you know, communications.
