One of the most iconic spaceships from the Macross universe would be the SDF-1. SDF is short for Super Dimension Fortress which is also the name of the anime in Japan, which is Super Dimension Fortress Macross. But for American viewers, and viewers in some parts of Asia, SDF-1 was known to be in Robotech, which was a combination of three animes: Macross, Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA.
A titular spaceship collectible/toy is a dream of many collectors which the market is not lacking. However, whatever you can find out there is pretty small to show off the magnificent detail of this massive spacecraft or sacrifice the proportion and details for the sake of the ability to transform. But that changed in 2020 with the ST03 1:1200 Robotech SDF-1 Macross Diorama Vacuum Tube Digital Sound System.
As the name suggests, it was a model of the SDF-1 Macross and also a speaker system. And it ain’t just any old speaker system either; it was a vacuum tube digital sound system.
When Kids Logic started on this project in 2016, the plan was to make an SDF-1 Macross that can be transformed like in the anime. Prototypes were created in the desired size but it turned out to be tedious to play with because of the size and the transforming function called for sacrifice of the proportion and details. So, the decision was made to ditch transformation and go with Attack Mode in 1:1200 size.
As a value-add to the display-only collectible, Kids Logic decided to include a sound system in the figure, so the ST03 1:1200 Robotech SDF-1 Macross Diorama Vacuum Tube Digital Sound System did be a functional collectible too; not merely a display piece.
In the audio reproduction department, it touts two 2” full range drivers and one 4” subwoofer, bolstered by a 2-channel vacuum tube amplifier as well as a digital power amplifier with a total output of 100 watts. It has a Bluetooth connection for wireless audio streaming. In addition, it has over 200+ LED lights.
The ST03 1:1200 Robotech SDF-1 Macross Diorama Vacuum Tube Digital Sound System had a limited run of just 800 pieces worldwide when it was released on October 2020. It had a price tag of, wait for it, a grand US$2,150. It may be sold out for a couple of years now but if you are willing to drop the money, you may still find it on eBay. But obviously, it is going to cost a lot more now.
