Here’s another bit of Godzilla news. I know, I promised not to put you through the ordeal of horrific, effortless Transformers and Godzilla crossover toys, but for the sake of completionists who simply must have them (the Transformers crossovers) all.
For better or worse, Takara Tomy just made it official with two new toys: Transformers Megatron TYPE Godzilla [JP] figure and Transformers Optimus Prime TYPE 3 Kiryu [JP] figure. And while the names sound like they could level a city block, they are really, really not that impressive.
First up is Megatron, now sporting a Godzilla-inspired look (almost!), courtesy of a DNA “fusion” with the King of the Monsters which is essentially a slightly retooled and re-color of the Studio Series Grimlock.
Standing at 9 inches (22.9 cm), this kaiju-style Decepticon stomps around with 26 points of articulation, a roaring sound effect, and even a clear effect part for his very own “atomic breath.”
This take on Godzilla-Megatron includes all the signature menace of the big lizard himself (kind of!)—plus two broken transmission towers for that classic kaiju battle vibe. Designed by Takeshi Oka, the figure’s release is set for late May 2025, with a price tag of 9,350 yen [JP] (around $63 USD).
Not to be outdone, Optimus Prime has gone all-out Kiryu, aka Mechagodzilla 3, transforming into a G-Force-inspired vehicle ready to take on Megatron in his new monster form.
Already, this sounds super ridiculous to some Gojira fans. Kiryu is, as mentioned, Mechagodzilla which is a cyborg kaiju but instead, this effortless crossover transformed into a what? Semi-truck? Geez. What were they thinking?!
The closest resemblance to Mechagozilla 3 is Optimus’ silver finish and the Mechagodzilla-inspired weaponry. There is also an unrelated to Mechagodzilla trailer that converts into a mobile repair bay.
Also dropping in May 2025 for 9,350 yen [JP], this Optimus gives fans a taste of what it’d be like if Earth’s favorite Autobot went kaiju. God damn it. I cannot do this anymore. It is not a cyborg kaiju. It is a robotto!
To be fair, if you disregard the forced association with the 70-year-old icon, both the Transformers Megatron TYPE Godzilla and Transformers Optimus Prime TYPE 3 Kiryu are great-looking figures. But damn, I wish they hadn’t done this.
