Books on camera/photography are a dime a dozen, but nothing teaches you the basic principles of photography better than a book that’s literally a camera. This Book Is A Camera, published by Museum of Modern Art, is exactly that. It is a book on camera and it is also a camera. In other words, this is a working camera that resides in a pop-up book. Novel! In addition to providing the hardware, AKA a pinhole camera, this book also explains how photographs are made possible through the intrinsic properties of light. Now, we all know the theory, but there isn’t a better way to demonstrate that well-known theory through practical demonstration.
For a modest 29 bucks, you will get a handsome book that contains a piece of paper folded into a working 4×5” camera, a lightproof bag, 5 sheets of photo-paper “film,” development instructions using household ingredients or photo chemicals, and “a satisfying demonstration of the connection between design and science/structure and function. Now that, my friends, is demonstrating the basic principle of imaging done right.
