Tiko 3D Printer

The first 3D printer we ever featured here cost slightly over 2,000 dollars and that was nearly three years ago. Since then, prices have seen sliding, but it is still not quite affordable like a regular printer and on top of that, they are mostly technically complex and requires dedicated software to be installed to get started. Doesn’t quite sound like fun, does it? But that is until Tiko 3D Printer comes along. Right of the bat, it wins hands down by price. At $179, it is the cheapest 3D printer to date and it is also one that takes on a minimalistic approach in both aesthetic and technical aspects. Instead of the usual rectangular form that requires separate rails and linear bearings, Tiko takes on a delta form that has rails built into its super strong unibody chassis, thus eliminating the odds of misalignments that will inadvertently result in inaccurate prints.

Also, less parts, means less things to worry about and therefore, lower cost and all are happy. It connects wirelessly to your computer and uses a cloud-based application to manage your projects and prints. Not to worry if you don’t have WiFi cos’ Tiko will create its own wireless network, opening up a direct communication between your desktop or laptop. Other mentions include an internal filament tray that takes up to 1 kg roll, integrated close build chamber, automatic safety shut off, a large 138.3 cubic inch print volume, and a flexible base. Want one? If so, you can pre-order it on Kickstarter for the said $179 and expect delivery in February 2016.

At this point, you must be wondering what’s up with the long wait time? Well, there were earlier estimated delivery dates in November, December and January were, but they are all snapped up under the early backer rewards. Bummer, I know. A lot of things can happen in ten months, so I won’t blame you if you are skeptical about the excruciating long wait time. To be honest, we wanted to back this project too, just to get our hands on one for our tiny space here. Unfortunately, ten months wait is simply not practical for a product in a segment that progresses at a breakneck speed. What a shame, really. Another time, perhaps. But we can see that many aren’t too concern about the wait as the campaign, which has 17 more days to go, have already pulled in more than 9,000 backers and over 1.5 million dollars in funding.
