China toymakers have been dishing out toys featuring real-life military vehicles that transform into robots. Takara Tomy, seemingly lifting a page off certain Chinese toymakers’ playbook, is doing the same for the Transformers franchise. However, the new line, Transformers Overgear, is nothing like the live-action Transformers. It is based on the concept of “real mecha.”
The first wave of Transformers Overgear introduces OG-01 Iron Hide and OG-02 Blackout, and both look like they report to duty rather than roll out to a Saturday morning cartoon. If I can be honest, when I first saw the trailer, Armored Core immediately comes mind. In that sense, I think Takara Tomy has hit the nail on the head with regards to “real mecha.”
Iron Hide leads the Autobot Resistance’s disguised third unit, “RED LIGHTNING,” posing as a civilian security company. He transforms into a heavily customized six-wheel pickup truck. Both vehicle and robot modes are packed with fine mechanical detailing, with multiple 3 mm and 5 mm joints placed across the body for modular customization.
You can swap in a Gatling gun, submachine gun, handgun, kukri knife, grenades, armor box, jerrycan, tool box, magnetic bomb, reactive armor, sensors, smoke dischargers, panel antenna, searchlight, and even track armor. The packaging measures W364 × H257 × D90 mm and is intended for ages 15 and up.
Blackout, representing the Decepticons, infiltrates a front organization known as GOA and transforms into a heavily armed, Apache-style attack helicopter. Like Iron Hide, he features dense mechanical sculpting and extensive 3 mm and 5 mm joint systems for weapon swapping. Included accessories range from an assault rifle and machine gun to missiles, rockets, and a fire control radar.
Both figures include a confidential document-style story sheet, blueprint-inspired spec sheet, logo sticker, and storage folder to flesh out the world-building.
Transformers Overgear OG-01 Iron Hide is scheduled for late October 2026 at 17,600 yen [JP] (~115 USD). OG-02 Blackout arrives the same month at 19,800 yen [JP] (~129 USD) [JP].
