researchers at the Case Western Reserved University has developed a polymer-based material that can heal itself under ultraviolet light. catch a short clip after the break to see the polymer in action and also the theory behind it. the researchers are working on a coating based on their development which could see a wide range of applications, including the automotive industry. while you can really make a car entirely out of plastic, but you could coat them with this special polymer that could make scratch marks on your car a thing of the past.

currently, this special polymers reacts to the ultraviolet light and quickly heals itself. it is indeed an amazing development. just imagine having your car coated with such a material of reasonable thickness. in event that your car is scratch, all you have to do is expose the scratch marks to the ultraviolet light and watch them heal. removes the ultraviolet light source, the polymer sets and your car healing is completed. isn’t it wonderful? i wonder what the auto body repair shops has to say about this.

however, it will be nice if the smart polymers can be tweaked to react to the natural ultraviolet light source, which obviously will not be as strong as the dedicated UV light. but if it does, those nasty scratches that tarnish the beauty of your car could be gone before you even realize it. provided it is daytime, though. this is going to be loved by all car lovers around the world. no more “what? another scratch? and here and here…” you get what i mean.
