Volvo is no stranger to electric cars. It currently has three electric models (or two stateside) which will be joined by the 2024 Volvo EX90 revealed this month. Starting with the 2024 Volvo EX90, the Swedish automaker said it will reveal one new fully electric car each year and it aims to sell only fully electric cars by 2030.
The 2024 Volvo EX90 is a true seven-seater, all-electric flagship SUV which will be initially offered in a twin-motor all-wheel-drive version, featuring two permanent magnet electric motors producing 517 HP and 910 Nm (671 lb-ft) of torque, paired with 111 kWh battery system that provides up to 600 km (373 miles) WLTP range. The battery recharges from 10-80 percent in under 30 minutes.
In addition to offering tailpipe-emission-free driving, the vehicle itself leans heavily on sustainability with the vehicle containing around 15% of recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminum, and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of recycled plastics and bio-based materials – which translates to about 15% of the total plastic used in the car.
The Volvo EX90 also marks the first car from the marque to support bi-directional charging which allows the car battery to power your home, other electric devices, or another electric Volvo car.
This being a high-tech electric car, the drivetrain isn’t the only thing that runs the clockwork; it has a core system – powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms Xavier and Orin, Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms, and in-house-developed software by Volvo engineers – that runs most of the core functions, from safety to infotainment to battery management.
I don’t know man. As much as I like to think of myself as a futurist, I am not sure I want to hand over control to software. If your phone ever experiences a software crash, you will know what I mean. Anyways, it looks like this is the future. I just hope that I can open the glove compartment by hand and not poke at a screen.
When exactly the 2024 Volvo EX90 will be available is unclear but if you are keen, you can reserve one today. As for the pricing. Volvo US said expects “well-equipped” to cost under US$80,000.
