Sony FX5 Cinema Line Camera
Sitting between the FX3 and FX6, Sony’s compact new cinema camera delivers 5K Open Gate capture, internal 16-bit RAW, and over 15 stops of dynamic range.

The Sony Cinema Line has a new middle child. Sitting between the compact FX3 and broadcast-ready FX6, the new Sony FX5 gives filmmakers serious cinema tools without requiring a camera operator built like a pack mule.

Inside is a newly developed full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor. It delivers over 15 stops of dynamic range, three base ISO settings—800, 4,000, and 12,800—and, for the first time in an FX-series camera, 3:2 Open Gate recording.

It can capture 5K at up to 60 fps, 4.5K at 120 fps, and Full HD at 240 fps (with 4K at 240 fps promised in a future firmware update). Better still, Sony’s 16-bit X-OCN RAW can be recorded internally, meaning one fewer box needs to dangle from your carefully assembled rig.

Other highlights include AI-powered subject recognition and tracking, five-axis stabilization, anamorphic desqueeze, active cooling, dual USB-C ports, wired LAN, and a 3.5-inch multi-angle touchscreen. An optional XLR handle enables four-channel, 96 kHz/32-bit-float audio, while a detachable OLED viewfinder is also available.

The FX5 arrives in August for £4,700 (or US$4,899.99) body-only or £5,200 (or US$5,499.99) with the XLR handle.
