2025 may be just another year for most people, but for diehard Back to the Future fans, it marks the 40th anniversary of the film hitting theaters. And you know what that means: commemorative merch to celebrate the trilogy—and one piece, in particular, is especially significant. We’re talking about the DeLorean Time Machine, set against the backdrop of the iconic Twin Pines Mall.
Created by Numskull Designs, the officially licensed Back to the Future: Time Machine Model Kit lets you build your very own time-traveling scene, piece by piece. But don’t go expecting a traditional model kit. There are no sprues, no runners, and no glue required. Instead, each of the 24 parts comes individually sealed in foil bags—yes, just 24 pieces total. No tools, no adhesives, no cursing over misaligned parts. I can already hear the purists groaning.
Back in the day, you’d have to painstakingly cut each part off the sprue, sand down the excess, and paint everything with an airbrush you definitely didn’t own. I remember my first model kit: a tiny Yamato battleship. It had all of that nonsense. A 9-year-old me had no means of doing all those, and most certainly did not own an airsprayer with a compressor—let alone having the space for this hobby. Needless to say, this hobby ended before it began.
Anyway, this kit skips all that drama. You still get the satisfaction of assembling something, minus the prep work that could pass for a full-time job. The completed model features a detailed replica of the legendary DeLorean, complete with lightning-charged cables, a plutonium case, and the iconic Twin Pines Mall sign as a backdrop. The kit even comes in a collector’s box modeled after the movie’s plutonium case. Note: Plutonium not included.
Once built, the display measures 18.8 cm wide, 18.2 cm deep, and 5.6 cm tall (7.4 x 7.2 x 2.2 inches). You can pre-order it now from the official Back to the Future online store for US$129.88. Shipping is expected to begin in June 2025.
