A square peg in a round hole would perfectly describe the situation if a vehicle tries to roll on square wheels. Square wheels are not suited for the job, as Mythbusters proved some years ago. But yet we have here seeing living proof of square wheels actually work and can do so without violently shaking your soul out of your body, or breaking any axle.
Folks, this is the bicycle with custom square wheels by the master of weird and whacky bicycle mods, The Q. Granted, these square wheels do not turn like regular wheels. Instead, The Q uses a combination of bicycle chains, metal rods, metal plates, and rubber cut from bicycle tires to create a tread that rolls around the square wheel.
It is a brilliant solution to having square wheels, ermmm, well, if that’s what you are after. It is very surreal to see a bicycle move without the wheel turning. Seeing it happening feels more like a glitch in the matrix. Like, you know, it does not appear to be rotating but yet it is able to move.
Of course, the wheels do not turn but only the DIY tread on each wheel does. The concept is fully functional and yes, it can make turns too but maybe not as sharp as a regular round wheel can.
Here, have a look at the build process and witness for yourself how it rode.
