Thanks to the popularity of Instagram, square format images are again a thing (it should always be anyways). Personally, I don’t favor square format photos, except when they are printed and if you are on the same page as me, well, good news to us, because Fujifilm has a new printer that does square print and it has its sight set squarely on smartphone users (read: Instagrammers). Called instax SHARE SP-3 SQ Printer, it is the first square format Instax printer that will let you print whatever you fancy straight from your smartphone, in square format, naturally.
The device connects to your smartphone via WiFi and print through the free instax SHARE app available for both Android and iOS. With the app, you can print images capture on your smartphone straight after you have taken them, or you can choose to print images that are available on your Instagram, Facebook, Weibo, Google Photos, Flickr, or even Dropbox account, with nothing more than a couple of clicks. Under the hood, the SHARE SP-3 SQ gets a new laser exposure system that enable it to spit a print in just 13 seconds and at a lower printing noise, if I might add.
Fujifilm SHARE SP-3 SQ promised to deliver high quality prints and so, it is perfectly suited for printing high-resolution photos which smartphones of today takes. A set of LED indicators serves to show the print progress, as well as letting you in on the number of prints available to you. It is designed to be portable and therefore, it is powered by rechargeable battery that offers up to 160 prints in between charges. While the hardware is sound or even brilliant, the magic perhaps is in the app that may actually makes printing fun again.
With the app, you explore the various templates to output fun prints. Like, for examples, you can split one image into two prints, print collage of up to 9 images, real time template that puts data like date, place, weather, temperature et cetera into the print, limited template that have each print numbered so they looks like a limited item, and finally, there is the template for printing images uploaded to social media, complete with profile photo and the number of likes indicated. Well, what can I say? The last one there is reserved for the social media maniacs.
In addition to templates, there are of course, various filters to soup up your photos before printing it out. While aimed squarely at smartphone users, the instax SHARE SP-3 is also compatible with Fujifilm’s X series cameras too, which is kind of cool. The Fujifilm instax SHARE SP-3 Printer SQ is expected to be available starting November with a $199.95 sticker. The instax SQUARE, which it requires to print, is already available in the market for in packs of 10 for $14.
