G-Shock’s 40th-anniversary celebration continues, this time with a unique timepiece co-created by AI and humans. The timepiece, dubbed G-D001, is a unique AI-created timepiece that embodies the brand’s ethos of innovation, design, and durability, marking a significant milestone since its inception.
The G-D001’s design is a result of a generative design process, using AI to create its exterior. It features a full-metal, shock-resistant structure with an 18-karat yellow gold case, bezel, and band, meticulously hand-polished by skilled craftsmen.
The G-D001 stands out with its see-through, dial-less design, allowing the internal mechanism to be visible. It has a unique movement with a metal main plate, silicone cogwheels, and ruby bearings for precision. The package includes a toweresque case with a sliding front cover, adorned with past and present G-SHOCK model numbers and an LED light for ambient lighting.
As a tribute to the “Father of G-SHOCK”, Mr. Ibe, the G-D001 symbolizes the brand’s ongoing evolution. It comes equipped with typical G-SHOCK technology like shock resistance, water resistance up to 200 meters, a solar charging system, radio control, dual time, a stopwatch, solar cell luminescence for visibility in dark locations, and a date display.
The G-D001 was auctioned by Phillips in New York on December 9 – 10, 2023, as a charity item, with all proceeds donated to environmental organizations. Speaking of which… it was sold for a cool US$400,050, well exceeding its estimated US$70,000-140,000.
