Kia is shaking things up at CES 2024 with their new Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy. They’re rolling out the red carpet for the several concept cars built on the PBV, including Concept PV5, a modular, do-it-all electric vehicle (EV) that’s like a Swiss Army knife on wheels. This is part of Kia’s big dream to revolutionize mobility with robotics, flying cars, and self-driving tech.
Their PBVs are all about custom-fit EVs with smart software, reimagining how we think about cars. Think of them as versatile, tech-savvy spaces on wheels, not just vehicles. Kia’s boss, Ho Sung Song, is all about going beyond traditional cars, offering tailored rides and services for different needs and markets.
Here’s the game plan: Kia’s PBVs will come in different flavors, solving various transport challenges, from individual needs to business logistics. They’re building a whole PBV ecosystem, with vehicles, software, and futuristic tech blending to add more value.
The roadmap has three phases. Phase one brings the PV5, an EV for stuff like hailing, deliveries, and utilities, with a knack for turning into different vehicles as needed. Phase two is about creating AI-powered mobility platforms, where PBVs interact with users and stay fresh with updates. Phase three? Kia’s PBVs will become ultra-customizable, meshing with the future mobility ecosystem.
But wait, there’s more! These PBVs aren’t just smart; they’re Transformers in disguise. They can change from a taxi to a delivery van or a personal ride, thanks to interchangeable ‘life modules’. The design is robust, clever, and user-friendly.
Kia’s not just stopping at cool cars. They’re creating a whole PBV-friendly world where these vehicles talk to each other, share features, and adapt to both business and personal needs. The lineup includes the Basic, Van, High Roof, and Chassis Cab models, and even a Robotaxi developed with Motional.
They’re also introducing smaller PV1s for nifty short trips and giant PV7s for more space and range. These PBVs come with a clever rail system for easy customization and smooth transfer of goods between vehicles.
Kia’s also cooking up awesome In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), Fleet Management Systems (FMS), and smart charging solutions, using AI to make life easier and more efficient for users.
The cherry on top? Kia is building a dedicated PBV factory in Korea, set to roll out in 2025 with a hybrid production approach. They’re also partnering up with big names like Uber and Dubai Taxi Corporation to boost their PBV business.
At CES, Kia is showing off their PBV concepts in an exhibition called ‘Place of Inspiration’. They’re also featuring an ‘EV Life for Everyone’ display, showcasing their EVs and future home and camping tech.
Kia’s grand plan is to leap beyond just making cars and become a leader in sustainable mobility solutions, making everyday life cooler, easier, and way more tech-savvy.
