Customizable keyboard is not new but this mechanical keyboard from startup MelGeek takes customizability to the next level AND makes it fun and playful too. Folks, meet Pixel, the LEGO Compatible Mechanical Keyboard by MelGeek.

Billed as the “world’s first LEGO compatible mechanical keyboard,” Pixel has a LEGO-inspired design that is fully customizable front and back. In addition, it has got RGB lights, is hot-swappable, boasts both wireless and wired mode, and it is a gasket mount keyboard.

Being a gasket mount keyboard, it means it will have a slightly more cushioned feel since the plate isn’t in direct contact with the other metal components of the keyboard. We heard it is quieter too. Though we can’t confirm if the gasket mount keyboard is indeed quieter.

Unlike a regular mechanical keyboard that lets you customize by swapping out keycaps and switches, the Pixel LEGO-compatible mechanical keyboard lets you customize the look and feel of the keyboard – thanks to the LEGO-compatible studs spread across the surfaces around the keys.

You can custom it with different color plates, and bricks, place a few Minifigures to keep you company on your lonely coding journey, or even build a structure on it. The world is your oyster, well, as long as your customization does not get in your way of using the keyboard.

The customization is not limited to the real estate outside of the keys; under each keycap is a stud that allows you to outfit the keys with your own LEGO keycaps. And then there are, of course, the hot-swappable switches. This allows you to switch out the Kailh box switches for switches of your choosing – as long as they are compatible with Pixel.

The Pixel LEGO Compatible Mechanical Keyboard by MelGeek will sell for US$269 when it becomes available (which we do not know when). However, you can secure it at a super early bird price of US$199 by paying a US$1 reservation fee. MelGeek said the super early bird is a very limited quantity but exactly how limited is not clear.
