Whether you are amassing LEGO Spider-Man vs. something sets or you find the made-for-AFOLs Daily Bugle way out of your budget, the new LEGO Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle (76342) should come as a pleasant surprise.
As the product name suggests, this set plays out Spider-Man’s own “Avengers” team, featuring fellow spiders Miles Morales and Ghost Spider (a.k.a. Spider-Gwen, or just Gwen Stacy from Earth-65), going up against Mysterio, Venomized Captain America (yup!), Rhino, and maybe also J. Jonah Jameson. You know how it is with Jameson; he’s such a pain in the butt that sometimes he is the most dangerous villain. Anyhoo, also yes, the not-much-feature-possessed alien Cap is in the set.
That said, this set is also a minifigure galore, boasting 7 minifigures that include Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Ghost Spider, J. Jonah Jameson, Mysterio, Venomized Captain America, and Rhino, plus a jointed Rhino mech with an opening cockpit and 3 transparent posing sticks to enable mid-air action.
The other star of the set is, of course, the scaled-down Daily Bugle—all four levels of it—with detailed interiors, including offices, reception, newsroom tech, a cash safe, and a working billboard-changing lever. On the outside, there is the requisite fire escape, a movable newspaper stand, and a street corner with traffic lights.
Finally, the set is furnished with quite a few accessories, including 3 white spiderwebs, Venomized Captain America’s shield, a photocopier machine, a skateboard, a safe containing money, a pizza tray, and more. When completed, the 781-piece set’s Daily Bugle measures over 13 in. (33 cm) high, 8 in. (20 cm) wide, and 2.5 in. (6 cm) deep.
