I don’t know why there is a need to include ‘Super Mario’ in the new LEGO Game Boy building set. Game Boy is just as iconic on its own, much like the NES. Perhaps it’s what Nintendo wanted. Or maybe “LEGO Game Boy” sounded like an actual handheld console co-branded with LEGO? I don’t know, but yeah, the LEGO Super Mario Game Boy (72046) you probably saw coming has just been made official by LEGO (on July 24, to be precise).
Joining the growing brick-built Super Mario sets and the LEGO Nintendo (71374) is yet another Nintendo-licensed 18+ set for grown-ups who still have calluses from Tetris marathons. It uses a modest 421 bricks to create a “near 1:1” replica of the iconic handheld that killed more AA batteries than any flashlight ever made. And so, no, it is exactly the size of the good’ol handheld but close enough to trigger the nostalgia in all of us.
It’s got the full detail treatment: the +Control Pad, A and B buttons, SELECT and START, volume and contrast dials—basically everything short of that dead pixel you swore wasn’t there. There’s even a working Game Pak slot, into which you can insert one of two brick-built cartridges: Super Mario Land or The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. And just so it doesn’t sit there totally lifeless, you get swappable lenticular screens to simulate gameplay—or go full nostalgia with the classic Nintendo start screen.
This collectible also makes a pretty slick display piece, measuring over 14 cm (5.5 in) high, 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, and 3 cm (1 in) thick. Basically, it looks real enough to try turning on—if not for the obvious lines from the fact that it was pieced together with plastic bricks.
