If you think the LEGO Technic 42111 Dom’s Dodge Charger looks cool, well, LEGO wants you to think again, and at the same time, let you know that you do not have to fight with your 10-year-old for it. Adult fans of LEGO, meet the LEGO Technic Fast and Furious Dodge Charger R/T Car (42231). Yes, it’s another LEGO Dodge Charger R/T, specifically inspired by Dom’s on-screen car of choice.
With 1,516 elements and measuring over 4 in. (11 cm) high, 16 in. (40 cm) long, and 7 in. (18 cm) wide when completed, the 42231 clearly has a lot more going on in terms of detail and realism. The model lets you build Dominic Toretto’s pride and joy, including the V8 engine with a chain-driven compressor, as well as rear-wheel drive with a cardan shaft and differential.
As expected of a model with such detail, it has functional independent front suspension as well as rear suspension, plus working steering, which you can try by turning the knob on the back. The details do not stop there. There are also two NOS bottles for that sudden jolt of boost and a fire extinguisher in case things go up in flames. Obviously, you are not going to have to use either because this is just a model.
As far as body shape goes, it does look the part—kind of. It is more angular than it should be. But to be honest, I do prefer the 42111, even though it is not quite accurate to the real car. That’s just me. The new 18+ set manages to recreate the curvature of the hood—well, at least the sides. I see that LEGO designers have chosen to use LEGO bricks to achieve that. It would be nice if the rest of the hood were slightly curved, too.
I also noted it may be proportionally different. I thought it should have a longer hood. No? But never mind what I think. If you are a fan of the franchise or just adore the Dodge Charger R/T, this is a must-have.
