If you ever wonder why so many brands are in the China market? Well, that is because China has a lively market for the pop culture and collaborations. More so than any country we have seen. The purchasing power of pop culture products is at an all-time high. And the latest foreign brands to take advantage of this trend are McDonald’s China and Bandai Namco.
The world’s famous fast food chain in China has collaborated with Bandai Namco to bring Gundam into the fast food mix. There are a few promos but nothing more attention-grabbing than the 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam plastic model kit in Big Mac colors. Yup. You heard that right. Gundam in Big Mac colors.
During the promo period which will run from April 26 to May 23, fans will be able to pick up a limited edition Gundam collector’s card and the aforementioned limited edition Big Mac-color Gundam model kit. Consumers will also find Gundam-themed packaging, including on the Big Mac box, cups, tray mat, and more. During this time, some restaurants will get a Gundam theme makeover too.
Starting on April 22 (China time), consumers can purchase select Big Mac Meal e-vouchers from McDonald’s China Tmall flagship online store and will have a chance to be among the first to secure a copy of the Big Mac color Gundam model kit. To secure the kit, you will have to shell out 129 yuan (about US$19) on top of the Big Mac product.
Though it is not clear if it is guaranteed that you will be able to buy one. However, one thing for sure is, any purchase of the Big Mac, ala carte or meal, will land you with a limited edition officially licensed Gundam collector’s card. All told there are 12 designs to collect. Among which are 10 classic Gundam models, plus a special Big Mac color and Augus color RX-78-2 Gundam card designs.
As always, expect this China-only plastic model kit to surface on eBay soon selling at a murderous price. Already, someone is already selling it on Taobao.com for 999 yuan (about US$145).
