Meizu MYVU Augmented Reality Smart Glasses

Smart glasses are still very much a trend, but most lean towards mixed reality or are marketed as video eyewear. Meizu, however, aims to transform them into everyday, usable devices, akin to our indispensable smartphones or smartwatches, with its new Meizu MYVU AR smart glasses. Two models are being offered: the Meizu MYVU AR Standard Edition and the Meizu MYVU AR Discovery Edition.

Meizu MYVU Augmented Reality Smart Glasses

The Meizu MYVU AR smart glasses, developed by the Xingji Meizu Group, represent a significant step in the evolution of augmented reality technology.

These glasses are notable for their exceptionally lightweight design, with the Discovery Edition weighing only 71 grams (2.5 oz.) and the MYVU Standard Edition at a mere 43 grams (1.5 oz.).

The Meizu MYVU AR Standard Edition [CH] features dual monochrome Micro LED displays (1,280 by 480 resolution) featuring resin diffractive light guide, 0.3cc light engine, and 2,000 nits brightness.

It further features a built-in dual speaker, 183 mAh battery, 30 MB of onboard storage, support for Flyme AI big model, support temple touch control as well as MYVU Ring using gestures.

The operation of the MYVU Standard Edition depends on the smartphone. It is an extension of your smartphone much like a smartwatch, It is offered in a choice of 6 colors and is available to order in China for 2,499 yuan [CH] (around US$350).

The Meizu MYVU AR Discovery Edition [CH], on the other hand, offers dual color Micro LED displays featuring a resin diffractive light guide, 0.4cc light engine, and 2,000 nits brightness and 1,100 nits of brightness.

Under the hood, the Discovery Edition boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 4 nm process chip that allows for simple onboard processing, and a 600 mAh battery that offers a whopping 8 hours of runtime.

It further touts a magnesium-aluminum alloy construction, dual speaker, support for Flyme AI big model, support temple touch control as well as MYVU Ring control.

Unlike the Standard Edition, the Discovery Edition is lauded as an entertainment eyewear too, thanks to its ability to playback colored images and videos.

In addition to touch-sensitive temples and gesture control using MYVU Ring, this new smart eyewear also supports voice commands and, of course, a connected smartphone.

It is worth noting that while both models support prescription lenses, they are not what you think they are. Because the lenses have a special coating to allow the displays to be cast on, they cannot be replaced with prescription lenses.

Instead, prescription lenses will attached on the inside as an attachment much like the sunglasses accessory that clips on the outside, like so:

The MYVU AR Discovery Edition smart glasses are launched in China and priced at 9,999 yuan [CH] (around $1,400). However, at the time of their release, there are no words on the availability of both models in the global markets. Oh, the MYVU Ring is also available for 399 yuan [CH], or about 56 USD.
