Despite the proliferation of smartwatches, the fictional tech from 70-ish years ago has never been realized. Yes. We are talking about the world’s most famous Dick’s two-way radio communication watch. OK. It is not actually the first “Official Dick Tracy Watch.” This is in fact the second iteration. Back in 2016, two brothers, armed with exclusive worldwide rights, had created one, but back then, the watch just look like Dick Tracy’s timepiece.
It does not have radio functionality like the fictional detective had. Fast forward to today, the duo, collectively known as Ivory & Horn, is ready to introduce the second version that is a lot closer to the hero’s original watch. Featuring a 316 stainless steel case, this rather faithful to Dick Tracy’s time telling/communication device now has a Bluetooth module in it that will allow it to be paired to a smartphone, so it can actually make calls like Dick always do.
Finally, right? I mean, the tech is there and yet, nobody wanted to make it real. I am glad that my childhood hero’s watch is finally going to be a reality. Though, granted, it is not quite the watch I have remembered. The one that I recall has the brass radio mesh on top, as opposed to below as the Official Dick Tracy Watch is presented in. It is still very recognizable and classy. One that befits the trench coat and suit wearing detective.
Speaking of the brass radio mesh… while this watch does have it, it is merely decorative piece that has no radio under it. So are the “radio buttons,” which really are just decorative buttons. But it, as highlighted, has a Bluetooth module so you could ask Siri to dial up whoever you desire. Functionality-wise, it is the same as the original watch.
Other highlights include a quartz Miyota 5R32 3-hand movement, beveled sapphire crystal, raised indices and Dauphine-style hands, 316L stainless steel crown and two-piece screw back, custom oil tanned leather strap, Ardillon-style stainless steel buckle and water resistance up to 3ATM. The latter means that you can’t take it for a dip in the pool. But it is fine under the rain, hand washing et cetera. But come to think of it. I don’t recall Dick ever swam. Did he?
The watch will be produced in limited number and each piece will be uniquely numbered. You can’t buy the Official Dick Tracy Watch by Ivory & Horn yet, but if you are super keen, then we suggest you sign up to be notified when the watch’s crowdfunding campaign launches on Indiegogo. We do not know the price, but according to the product’s website, early birds will get as much as 40 percent off the eventual retail sticker.
