Battery-backed emergency lighting has been standard in commercial buildings for decades, from illuminated exit signs to unmistakable twin-head “bug-eye” fixtures. Now, the same idea is making its way into ordinary household lighting—an especially useful development in earthquake- and typhoon-prone Japan. That idea is a battery-powered light bulb.
The OSRAM Rechargeable LED Light Bulb puts that preparedness inside an ordinary-looking bulb. Screw it into a compatible E26 fixture, and it functions as a regular 5.4W LED bulb, producing 700 lumens of neutral-white light while quietly charging its internal battery.
When the mains supply fails, the bulb switches to battery power and produces approximately 200 lumens for up to three hours. It will illuminate only when the wall switch is turned on, so a blackout does not immediately drain every equipped bulb in the house. As the battery approaches empty, the light gradually dims instead of suddenly abandoning you to the darkness.
OSRAM also includes a portable socket with an on/off switch and hanging hook. Unscrew the bulb, attach the socket, and it becomes a rechargeable lantern for moving around the house, evacuating, camping, or investigating whatever just made that noise downstairs.
Even without the socket, touching the bulb’s metal base and bottom contact simultaneously completes a weak circuit through the body and makes it illuminate. Dry hands may require slight moistening, which sounds suspicious but is an intended feature.
Inside is a lithium iron phosphate battery chosen for its thermal stability and lower risk of thermal runaway. It requires around eight hours to charge, is rated for roughly 500 cycles, and cannot be replaced. The LED itself has an estimated 40,000-hour service life.
The OSRAM Rechargeable LED Light Bulb [JP] measures 118 × 62 mm, weighs approximately 130 g, and has been available in Japan since November 2025 at open pricing.
It is intended only for indoor use and is incompatible with dimmers, enclosed fixtures, and insulation-covered fittings. OSRAM also stresses that it is a supplementary household disaster-preparedness product—not a legally compliant emergency light or exit fixture.
Still, unlike the flashlight buried somewhere inside the disaster-supplies cupboard, you will always know where this bulb is. We only wish the battery could last longer, like perhaps 8 hours, or more. Anyhoo, it is a perfect addition to your possibly hard-to-find-in-an-emergency flashlights.
In Japan, the OSRAM Rechargeable LED Light Bulb is available through its Koyodenki Co., Ltd. for 2,860 yen plus tax [JP] (about US$18). We also found it being sold on Rakuten Bic for 3,980 yen with tax [JP] (around US$25).
