Decades ago, automotive and timepiece hardly had any relation, but these days, automotive-inspired timepieces or automaker/watchmaker collabs are very much a norm. I believe we have seen quite a bit here, of which includes the likes of Breitling Bentley chronograph and Jaguar x Bremont, and now, Ralph Lauren. In fact, the Ralph Lauren Automotive Skeleton Watch, as it is called, is not the first from the American fashion label; it is the second model that also happens to be inspired by the classic, if not iconic, 1938 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic Coupe. Not surprisingly, Ralph Lauren is a huge auto head and also not surprisingly, the $40 million 1938 Bugatti 57SC is among the fleet of cars he owns. But seriously, a second automotive-inspired watch still based on the same car? Man, Mr. Lauren sure have deep love for this particular classic.
Anyways, the watch, which is part of the label’s ‘Automotive Collection’, debuted at the SIHH in Geneva. What makes the watch stands out is, it was actually directly inspired by the dashboard of the Bugatti Ralph Lauren owns. It boasts a straight up luxurious features which I am sure you folks have already noticed: a bezel (or ring, if you prefer) of Amboyna burl wood, which is an exotic wood commonly used in the instrument panels of the luxury vehicles back in the 30s. Powered by a Swiss mechanical movement, other notables of this awesome timepiece include 45-hour reserve, superluminova coated hands, black stainless steel case, double AR-coated sapphire crystals, black matte galvanic Azure dial, and for this particular example, it rounds up with a black alligator strap with black Alsavel lining and black shot-blasted stainless steel pin buckle.
We all know how rare the 1938 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic Coupe is today, so this watch is probably the closest symbolic object you will get to owning the actual classic. However, availability is not known. As for the pricing, you can be sure it won’t come cheap (that goes without saying, eh?). It was rumored that to carry a $35,000 sticker. Ouch. But it is so beautiful…
